“Defaming The Scholars : A Tradition Inherited from Bani Israel
Those who have read the biography of Imam Bukhari must have gone through an important chapter about the Sayyedul Muhaddith (The leader of the scholars of Hadith) being defamed and dragged into a controversy of which he was no part. The story goes like this : Imam Bukahri was invited to Nisiapur, his native place. On the day of his arrival he was greeted by thousands of people on the street.
But within a few days the wind changed its course. A noted scholar of Nisa pur, who was also a scholar of the Qur'an and Sunnah, issued a fatwa against Bukhari. Since the local scholar was also a big name in his city, people listened to him and believed him. Imam Bukhari had to leave the city of Nisia pur,This time he was alone and only one man came ot see him off. The biography published by Daruss salam says: The local scholar was a bit jealous of Imam Bukhari's rise as a scholar.
Jealousy among scholars brought the down fall of Bani Israel, says the Qur'an in Surah As Shura'.. ch 42, verse 14.. And they became divided only after knowledge reached them, through jealousy between them... Many scholars have had to go through unwanted, undesired controversies because some people some where could not tolerate their acceptance.
Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal had to undergo a strong opposition from the government of his time and he faced a punishment of whips so severe that they say, even an elephant would not have tolerated. Imam Malik was tied up and that caused him a dislocated shoulder for the rest of his life.
A couple of years back, ARY TV aired a lecture of Dr Israr, and it was umpteenth time to be aired where he spoke about a hadith regarding Ali r.a. The shias raised a storm of controversy and the grave worshippers too danced on their tune. later on the poor old man was always seen with cops around him. Some cut and paste Muftis still continue to chase Dr Zakir Naik too trying to peel controversies out of his some answers.
It is easy to raise up a storm to malign a scholar. Just pick up an issue and keep on telling every one you see , every one you meet. These days you can write on the Face book walls of all of your friends and defame a scholar. You can revive an issue on which scholars of high caliber already differed for a long time but present it before the people as if it has just happened , and you were the first one to discover it . Your notes will be picked up by some enthusiastic up coming Daeee and he willadd his own opinion and make the controversy more spicy. The more well known the scholar the spicier the controversy.
